Between Us is a project that consists on a photographic workshop with two groups of youngsters, one from an urban neighbourhood in Matosinhos, a neighbour-city of Porto by the west coast of Portugal, and the other group from small rural communities in the Douro region of Alijó deep in the rural countryside. After an early and basic teaching on photography, more concern on the visual perceptions rather than the technical features, a digital compact camera was given to each young photographer. And for over a year, in an intuitive and instinctive approach, they recorded glimpses of their social and personal lives. With this, the main intention of the project was to produce and confront two apparently opposite visual records of social and contemporary lives, the urban versus the rural, that in Portugal in particular, takes a special geographic characteristic between the urban littoral so much more developed than the interior increasingly abandon due to lack of economic opportunities. All of this from the viewpoint of the younger ones in a direct, intimate and honest way, making it a relevant social study upon our current times.

Along the coordination of the all project that included a regular mentoring and stimulating on the young ones, it was developed a video-doc on the overall development of the workshop that aims to be as well an analysis about these worlds aparently so distant and disparate, that so well portray Portugal. Along with the collaboration of a social assistant (Rita Rego) and a journalist (Eduarda Freitas), and taking as a starting point the images and words of those who are still in an age shrouded in innocence, it is intended to find out how their realities are, their dreams and sorrows, their desires and fears, their joys and tears, and there maybe unfold a glimpse of what is Portugal and its future.
